Abstract

This study aims to explore differences in transformational leadership style, transactional leadership style and job satisfaction among teachers in SMKA and SMK.The study also seeks to identify the relationship or correlation between transformational and transactional leadership styles to job satisfaction of teachers in SMKA and SMK.The tool for measuring transformational leadership was adapted from the MLQ scale(Multi Factor Leadership Questionnaire). Form 5X-Rater (1992). The questionnaire was revised from the MLQ-Form 5 which was formed by Bass in 1985. Poon, June ML
(1995) have used this questionnaire as a measuring tool when conducting a study on 103 workers at companies that had been listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange.
Khalid (1997) used questionnaires that have been built by Poon, June ML (1995) and modified it to better fit with the field of education. Tools for measuring transactional
leadership were obtained from Bass and Avolio (1995) cited in Felfe (2002), while job satisfaction was measured by teacher questionnaires formed by Speed (1979). The data
was collected from 212 respondents covering six schools, namely three SMKAs and three SMKs. Results analysis shows there is no significant difference between transformational leadership and transaction leadership styles of principals in SMKA and SMK. As for test results, the mean score of teacher satisfaction in SMKA is 3.72,while for those in SMK it is 3.35. This indicates that job satisfaction among teachers in SMKA is higher compared to that of SMK. Similarly, there is no significant difference in all subscales of transformational and transactional leadership styles except for that of between SMKA and SMK. Multiple regression analysis shows that there is no independent variables that significantly affect teachers’ job satisfaction and that there is no reliable predictor that affects teachers’ job satisfaction whether in SMKA or SMK.
However, the independent variables had a bigger influence in SMKA than in SMK.Overall all the variables have a significant impact on teachers' job satisfaction in both
SMKA and SMK.
